“Advance Geomechanics, Reservoir Characterization and Imaging Specialist”

High Pressure Triaxial Test

Rock Fluid Imaging Lab provides geomechanical modeling laboratory service as advanced access tools in some unconventional reservoir characterization (Fracture and Shale Gas), soil/wellbore stability analysis and other rock mechanics case.

Application in Oil and Gas:

  • Assess reservoir rock strength and stiffness: This helps engineers understand the ability of the reservoir rock to withstand the pressures and stresses of production and injection.
  • Simulate in-situ stress conditions: The test can simulate the stress state of the reservoir at different depths and under varying production scenarios. Therefore, the critical stresses of a well can be analyzed.
  • Evaluate the impact of drilling and fracturing: The test is used to analyze reservoir integrity and potential for hydrocarbon production.
  • Determine rock properties: This information is crucial for reservoir modeling, well planning, and production optimization.

Triaxial tests (SST, MST) are used to determine rock failure parameters, principally Mohr-Coulomb cohesive strength and friction angle, under representative reservoir loading/stress conditions, Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) from extrapolation of confined failure strengths, and static elastic moduli—Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio—under representative reservoir loading/stress conditions.

Equipment:

The High Pressure Triaxial tests are performed using a compression machine with servo-controlled. Sample deformations are measured using Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDTs) system.

  • Up to 60.000 psi confining pressure
  • Up to 140.000 psi axial stress
  • Pore Pressure Effect in Mohr-Coulomb Failure Criteria
  • Radial strain gauge for delivery accurate lateral strain (more than 6 times of lateral axial strain)
  • Fully digital-telemetry deliver loading and unloading scenario
  • Auto adjusting confining and axial stress
  • Micrometer (μm) resolution with one-second sampling rate for all of the stresses and strains

Deliverable:

  • Young Modulus

  • Poisson's Ratio

  • Failure Criteria (Mohr Coulomb Envelope)
  • Internal Friction Angle
